Appaloosa is one of the most popular horse breeds in the US and to me represents independence, freedom, and character. Those are the key attributes of the company I founded and a classic representative of the breed is prominent in our logo.
I have always loved horses. As a child allergies kept me away from riding, but as an adult I have developed a strong passion for equestrian sport. Many years ago my wife and boys took an especially memorable trip to a horseback riding ranch. It was then I was introduced to the Appaloosa breed.
In addition to their distinct and often beautiful markings, I found the breed to be a wonderful mix of strength, agility, loyalty, and independent spirit. We strive every day to represent those same characteristics in our firm.
The name is also in admiration of hedge fund manager and philanthropist David Tepper, who founded Appaloosa Management in 1993. He is a brilliant investment professional who worked for Cleveland based Republic Steel early in his career.
